Greenacre Lodge is great for going to small local suppliers of everything you can imagine and it is also within an hour’s drive of Cambridge, Ipswich (45 minutes) and Norwich (40 minutes), so fantastic for combining some sightseeing with shopping!
Close by, there are farmers’ markets most weekends. Bury St Edmunds has a twice weekly market (Wednesday and Saturday) which takes up the most of the town centre and has everything you could possibly wish for, from food to clothing, haberdashery to plants, hardware to jewellery. Diss has a market on Friday mornings which is small but has local providers of food and drink every week – it’s always hard to pass by. There is a local farm shop which sells local pork, and another nearby which sells vegetables and flowers so all the ingredients for a Sunday roast are within 10 minutes!
Our closest supermarket is the Co-op in Rickinghall which has everything you will need and which is open from 7am – 10pm every day except Sunday. Slightly further away are Aldi, Morrisons and Tescos in Diss – 15 minutes drive.
If you want to eat out, you have some fantastic choices within 10 minutes drive. Closest is the White Horse in Thelnetham, which is the next village to ours going north. If you are a cyclist or walker, it would make a nice day out and will take you about an hour to walk to. The pub has a great ambiance and serves guest beers and lovely wine, accompanying some quite special food, with menus changing regularly with the seasons. Going south, the next villages are Rickinghall and Botesdale, which meld one into another as you drive along the main road. These house The Bell, which has great pub food and a friendly set of locals who will greet you like a long lost friend. Further along the road is the Greyhound, noteable for the picture of a spaniel in the pub sign! This has a pizza oven and all food is cooked in front of you. They also have live music and a great atmosphere.
For takeway food, you can’t beat the Blue Orchid Chinese in Botesdale. This serves the best Chinese food we have tasted and is not expensive. Also in Botesdale is a pizza and fish/chip shop. We also like the fish and chip shop in Stanton.
This has given you just a flavour of the shopping, eating and entertaining you can find in the local area – do a little internet research and you will find so many things to do and eat that you will need to come back again and again!
