If you come to stay at Greenacre Lodge, there will always be homemade jam available for you and if you eat your way through the pot we leave you, you can buy more from us at any time! The store cupboard is filling up rapidly at Greenacre House, as the fruit in the orchard comes to ripeness. This week we have made 3.5kg of plum jam – a delicious light purple jam which has set hard and tastes just a little bit tart, taking away the sweet edge of the jam. Plums have a number of health benefits so eating our plum jam should be great for us! One medium-sized fresh plum contains 113 mg of potassium, a mineral that helps manage high blood pressure and reduce stroke risk. If that isn’t encouraging enough, the reddish-blue pigment in some plums, called anthocyanins, may protect against cancer by mopping up harmful free radicals. We know we shouldn’t eat so much sugar but you can’t make a decent jam without sugar and we hope that the benefits outweigh the bad bits!
